A number of Cherry Grove restaurants, bars and other businesses ended their season during Columbus Day weekend.
On Saturday, October 6, Jumping Jack's Seafood Shack had a free afternoon buffet, including calamari, fried fish, steak, pasta and appetizers. Cherry Lane, at Cherry's, had a festive closing party that night, at which Ginger Moore did a couple of numbers. Island Breeze restaurant became a disco for the evening, with Michael John serving as DJ, and had a complementary buffet, including chicken, pork, rice with andouille, and fried ravioli and other pasta, the following afternoon. All events proved extremely popular.
The Grove Grocer, Cherry Grove Pizza, and Rainbow Dreams, the gift shop at the Grove Hotel, closed for the season that weekend as well.
The Tides and the Grove Hotel's Ice Palace, both of which have new owners, This 'n That's 'Uncle' Frank having bought the former and Dune Point's Dr. Frank, the veterinarian, having bought the latter, had closed the previous weekend. The big news from the Grove Hotel is that Isaac Steven Vaughan, its managing partner for 17 years, would not be returning and that Sal Piro would be its manager and would continue as entertainment coordinator as well.
Sunset's was set to close the weekend after Columbus Day weekend, with a closing party scheduled for that Saturday.
