What a Summer It Was!-Nature Surrounds Us on Fire Island
Swans on Meat Rack Beach

What a beautiful, busy summer we had on Fire Island! In August, sometimes as many as eight major events crowded the weekends, and that was after ruling some out as impossible to make it to. But somehow it never became too busy for us to stop and appreciate the wondrous natural surroundings we live in and to look at them with renewed awe.

Swans visited us in great profusion, sometimes in numbers as great as two dozen or more at a time on the Great South Bay. Cardinals and turtles eluded our cameras-until they didn't. Magnificent, many-pointed bucks made their presence known, including one that some people dubbed 'Mr. Long-Tongue.' He received necessary antibiotics from a veterinarian-in-residence--but not for the lolling tongue, apparently a natural, genetic condition, according to Dell Harbin and her Violet Letter, successor to the late Bill "Violet" Silver's Wild Cherry newsletter.

Regarding valued Grovites we lost, we also honor, beside that of Violet, the memories of the late Philip Williams, Lucia Sutera, Vaunessa (Vaughn) Vale, Bill McGraw, Dutch Wavering and Freddie Scarfone, and of the Pines' Ron McKenna and Clern LaFountaine. Clern's daughter, Nicole, valiantly went on with the show, as Miss Mona, in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," Fire Island Pines Arts Project's first effort in the new Whyte Hall Community Center, during the same week that her father died.

Out of one of these tragic losses came a personal blessing, as Philip's survivor, Peter B, asked my partner, Joe, and me to adopt Phil's sweet, beautiful cats, Ramses (Ram, or Rammy) and Amun Ra (Moon, or Moonie). Of the 'Mau' breed, which originated in Egypt, they look like miniature snow leopards.

Our splendid beaches, our towns, and our woods are, alas, not appreciated by everyone as much as they should be. In lieu of watching the woods become a water bottle, beer and soda can, and condom-strewn slum, which even the litter bugs would eventually come to shun, some of us have taken upon ourselves the task of upkeep, putting up and removing trash bags in the 'Meat Rack,' as Joe and I do; trimming dead branches from its trees, as David Samuel Menkes does; and building and maintaining wooden bridges, like the venerable 'Bridge of Carnal Desires,' over the swamps, as Kent C. Dillon does. People: our island is very fragile--take better care of our natural surroundings.

The colorful Monarch butterflies, harbingers of change of season from summer to fall, came early. The asters, heralding the forthcoming winter, appeared weeks later, at about the time the leaves' fall color did. As winter turns to fall, remember the birds and animals, flowers and trees, the woods, the beach and the ocean, the sunsets over the bay that marked the summer of 2007. Here are some souvenirs of this memorable summer.
