On September 8, in the 42nd annual Miss Fire Island Contest, at the Grove Hotel, Stephanie Stone beat out 14 other contenders and succeeded Epiphany as Miss Fire Island; Sugga Pie Koko bested 15 other competitors and followed Victoria Michaels as Entertainer of the Year; and Viva Sexx (Miss Fire Island 2000), breathtaking in a white gown with gold glitter, designed by Josie, won out over seven others and gained the Ms. Fire Island title previously held by Demi-Tasse. In a riotous "I'm holding out for a hero," Sugga Pie Koko produced and ate a hero sandwich and changed into a Wonder Woman costume and "flew," stretched out horizontally over several bar stools.

As runner-up to Stephanie Stone, Mirkala Crystal was named Miss Cherry Grove and, as second runner-up, Courtney Summers became Miss Ice Palace. Sponsor Coors gave its award to Rebecca Glasscock for her performance of "(Sweet like a sugar-coated) Candy Man." Madison Mansfield was named Miss Giving, the congeniality award; Victoria James, as Marilyn Monroe doing "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend," was voted Miss Leading, for distinction as one of the first three contestants to perform; and Dakota Sue (Miss Fire Island 2004) was dubbed Miss Fit, for her three-part number: in sleepwear for "Nine to Five;" in crisp business attire for "She Works Hard for the Money;" and in serious party clothes for "I Just Wanna Dance."

Jason Cosmo, who, as Liza Minnelli, did "New York, New York," won the title Miss Popular and Desiray got the Judges' Award for declaring, "I'm a redneck woman" and peppering her song with redneck jokes.

Isaac Steven Vaughan was Executive Producer of the contest and Sal Piro was its Director. Mistresses of Ceremonies were Bella, who entered emoting in "And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going," assisted by Peter B; Ariel Sinclair, who relieved a male audience member of his shirt; did a makeover, with Gusty Winds, on a female audience member; and tried to get another woman to remove her top, all on stage; and Porsche, who, assisted by DJ Manny Ojeda, sang "Rehab" as Amy Winehouse, Judy Garland, Carol Channing and Shirley Bassey in quick succession.

Brandon Cutrell, singing gorgeously, was the soloist for the national anthem and the "Ballad of Miss Fire Island," by Johnny Savoy, with new last verse penned by Isaac. Judges were designer Dong (Potenciano Adobas); Charity, the second and earliest living Miss Fire Island, who celebrated the 40th anniversary of her crowning with "Piece of My Heart;" this writer, the first Mr. Fire Island Leather (2001); Island Mermaid's Scott Hirsch; Fire Island Sun, Theatre Scene and Fire Island Tide's Jeannie Lieberman; Chicago Reader Art Director Sheila Sachs, responsible for Miss Fire Island graphics; and Gusty, Entertainer of the Year 2005. Dennis McConkey was the tally judge.

Miss and Ms. Fire Island contestants were judged on poise, presentation, make-up, hair, accessories, and outfit. Miss Fire Island contenders appeared in both daywear and evening gowns.

Epiphany stepped down as Miss Fire Island 2006, pouring out her heart singing a slow "At Last." Victoria Michaels did a striptease, with huge wings as accessories, to a medley of "Last Dance," "Greatest Love," "I'm Every Woman," and other disco songs. Demi-Tasse ended her reign to the tune of "Fly Me to the Moon."

Familiar Grove faces in the Miss Fire Island competition included Jean Germaine, Gina Marie, Aurora Stone, China, and reigning Homecoming Queen Lola Galore. Among the Entertainers were bodacious Julie, doing "Big Spender;" Billy Little, as comic Wanda Sykes, doing a stand-up routine; Tommy Femia, singing "Come to the Cabaret" and "Swanee" as Judy Garland; and Donna Piranha, assisted by Doreen Rallo and Bobbie Green, her "Band of Gold" a hula hoop, which she kept going for most of the song. Elegant Ambrosia and Ann Tique and the hotel's René Ryan were in the Ms. Fire Island competition.

Stephanie Stone left the contest with $1,000, the crown, title and trophy. Sugga Pie Koko won $750, her title and trophy. Viva Sexx won $300, a crown and the title. Mirkala's cash prize was $400 and Courtney's was $200. The Most Popular title, based on audience response, came with a $200 prize and a plaque; the Judges'Award, with $150 and a plaque; and the Coors award, with $100 and a plaque.
