The Virgin Mary so rarely gets to have her say, lyrically, that she eagerly seized the opportunity to do so, at the Tides on August 26, in the person of Mimi Imfurst (Braden Chapman), in "a divine musical experience" entitled "Mary, Like a Virgin," with the assistance of Mike Pettry at the piano. Daniel "Sweetie" Booth staged the rollicking show. Imfurst's Mary wore a short "Salvation Armani" robe, headscarf, and high heels, while Pettry sported his bar mitzvah best.
Singing and quipping, this Mary shared her story, her dilemmas, her Broadway aspirations, and her observations, with her music director chiming in, in such (im)pertinent songs as "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Like a Prayer," "Good Morning, Nazareth" (i.e. Baltimore), "If I were a carpenter and you were a lady," "I don't know how to love them (both)," "Let It Be," "Like a Virgin," "Joy to the World," and "Time After Time." "God looks sort of like Bea Arthur-only softer," she offered.

She spoke of refusing communion because "I'm on the Atkins diet;" going off her diet-"You should eat chips for your heart" (i.e. "Total eclipse of the heart"); and taking "leftovers from the Last Supper" to reheat in the microwave.
Mary told us of making her way to the manger, riding Joseph's ass, in the Tracy Chapman-inspired "You've got a fast mule;" used finger puppets to assist in an awed "Do you see what I see?" and showed off her son's school project, a macaroni art "Last Supper." "Don't leave me this way," she pleaded, for her answer to the Stabat Mater.
Broadway-bound ("If Elaine Stritch or Chita Rivera can do it ..."), she wondered, to a tune from "Gypsy," when it was finally going to be "Mary's Turn;" assured, "Chicago"-style that "The name on everybody's lips is gonna be Mary;" and borrowing from "Wicked," anticipated "Defying my virginity."
"Proud Mary," capped with a rousing "Amen," was her grand finale, with "Salve Regina" substituting for "Rolling on the river," and, for encores, she delivered such variations on television theme songs as "It's the story of a girl named Mary" ("Brady Bunch") and "Wise men, meet the wise men" ("The Flintstones").
