Shequida Closes Season at Tides with Song & Whitney Houston 'Tribute'
Bruce-Michael Gelbert

With Michael John on sound and Randy Baker on spotlight, classically-trained singer Shequida concluded a season at the Tides, on the last Monday of summer, lavishing dark, full-throated tone on her raunchy takes on "Luck, Be a Lady Tonight," from "Guys and Dolls," as "Fuck, I'm a Lady Tonight," and a bilingual (English and Spanish) "I Who Have Nothing."

Shequida spoke of her experience performing in Las Vegas just the night before, and dedicated "Private Dancer" to Serreta Edge and a sincere "We Are a Family," from "Dreamgirls," to her all Grove colleagues.

An equal opportunity destroyer, Shequida dished Barbra Streisand, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, O.J. Simpson, the Long Island Railroad, Candis Cayne, and Porsche, who was present, and offered her wild impression of Whitney Houston doing the "Star Spangled Banner," "I Will Always Love You," and "It's not Right, but it's Okay," as well as abusing various substances and getting religion. With the last, she sang, a cappella, "Jesus is my high," scaling the heights with some head voice top tones.

Shequida closed by singing "Car Wash" as "(Working at a) Gay Bar." Her encores were a rap about sex ("How Many Dicks Does It Take") and "Don't You Wish Your Girlfriend Was Hot like Me." She's quite a trip.
