| Grovettes Quickly Trounce NYPD Team in Cherry Bowl Volleyball Tournament |

Under a scorching noonday sun on August 1, the Grovettes quickly trounced a New York City Police Department volleyball team in the annual Cherry Bowl Tournament, at the net outside the Grove Hotel and the Tides.
The Grove team bested the police team 25 to 13 in a fast first game. It was more neck and neck in the second game, for which the police team brought out its only woman member, whom announcer Sal Piro dubbed its "secret weapon," but the Grovettes claimed victory in the end, with a score of 25 to 13.
Ellen Biggers was the referee; Martha Pitkin, the scorekeeper; and Paul Jablonski, Rae DiStefano and Wendy Lewis, the line judges. The tournament was preceded by a parade of flag bearers Paul, Denise Harbin, Ellen, Rae, Christopher, and me; the cheerleading Cherry Tarts, led by Ariel Sinclair; Cherry Queen Serreta Edge; and the Grovettes.
After all assembled sang the "Star Spangled Banner," Queen Serreta tossed out the first ball to the police team. Later, Porsche sang "Mickey" ("Oh, Mickey, you're so fine") and the Grovettes formed a pyramid, with two muscular police officers at its base.
Line judge Rae proudly summed up the proceedings, saying, "The only way they'll ever beat us is if they bring their guns."
