The Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) celebrated the movies at its Hollywood Casino, at the Community House, on July 21 and 22. The annual casino is the biggest fundraiser of APCG's season. In the absence of Marge Cozzolino, who traditionally presides, but was home, recuperating from a heart attack, her sidekick Francine Sardone, nicknamed 'Marge Junior,' oversaw the proceedings.
Two huge gold Oscar statues dominated the scene. Movie posters decorated the walls. In charge of card games, the wheel of fortune and other games of chance, staff members came as favorite movie stars or characters; in attire they might wear to a glamorous film opening; or in costumes otherwise evocative of the cinema. Many who came to gamble opted for apt attire as well.
Homecoming Queen Lola Galore came as Barbarella, in a Queen of Outer Space costume of a silvery sheen. Lois Fisher was Charlie Chaplin. Matt Baney was "Psycho"'s Norman Bates and Matt Rosenblum was Andy Warhol. There were dueling Marilyn Monroes, thanks to blonde bombshells Coco Love and Robin Kradles. The Grove Hotel's Isaac Steven Vaughan wore a reel of film as a headdress, his costume, designed by Jeffrey Wallach, adorned with unfurling spools of film, and Laura came as the opening night red carpet. An elegant Lynne Abrams said that Jeffrey told her that if anyone asked who she was supposed to be, she should say she was Ginger Rogers as Kitty Foyle. Gary Greene was a Roman centurion and Luisa Verde was Carmen Miranda. Barbara Dowd, Bella, Panzi, Joyce Rodgers, Demi-Tasse, and a glittering Denise Harbin radiated movie star glamour. Susan Freedner wore a shirt decorated with images of Bette Midler. Joe Saporito and I, behind the bar, dressed in our leather and hoped people would see us as figures from a biker flick.
