| Brandon & Ray Serve up Back to Back Helpings of "Broadway at the Beach" |

Singer Brandon Cutrell and pianist Ray Fellman have been offering their show "Broadway at the Beach," the successor to last season's "Mostly Sondheim," on Monday nights at the Ice Palace at the Grove Hotel, in Cherry Grove, Fire Island, since early June, featuring guest theater, cabaret and opera singers, as well as talented locals. At the end of July, our hosts served up a double helping of "Broadway," with an embarrassment of musical riches, on Sunday and Monday, the 29th and the 30th.
Brandon and Ray did two numbers from their new Nantucket Sound CD, "Brandon Cutrell--Chuck Coleman's "Halley's Comet" and Michael Mahler and Alan Schmuckler's "That's When I Miss You"--as well as songs by Michael John LaChiusa and Jason Robert Brown, and standards "Let's Misbehave" and "Goody Goody." Equipped with accordion, hotelier Isaac Steven Vaughan joined them for a rollicking "VD Polka" ("Look out for the goodtime girl"), from "Over Here," the Andrews Sisters musical.
Special guests on the first night were New York Music Festival Broadway Idol winner Jaclyn Huberman, New York City Opera baritone Michael Chioldi, and Jeremy Whistine. Michael returned on the second night and Broadway colleagues joining him were Nicholas Rodriguez, from "Tarzan," and Jerad Bortz, from "Wicked" and "The Pirate Queen."
Jaclyn sang a moving "Meadowlark," from "The Baker's Wife," and wry "Happy" ("I can't believe you're gay").
Michael, a Fire Island virgin, brought to Billy Bigelow's challenging high soliloquy, from "Carousel," all the bravura of the "Pagliacci" prologue, and followed up the scena with "Being Alive," from "Company." Encoring the numbers the next night, he sang parts of them without amplification, handily proving that he never needed the mic at all.
With spirit, Jeremy queried, "What is it about her?" and declared, "I know the sun will rise." He collaborated with local Brian Roland on "I Will Cover You (with a thousand sweet kisses)." For his solos, Brian sang from "Miss Saigon" ("Why, God? ... just her") and limned "The old red hills of home."
Nicholas sang "Ain't Misbehavin'" and inspirational ballad ("He's got a way about him)."
As Fiero in "Wicked," Jerad took us "Dancing Through Life" and saw to it that "No Good Deed" would go unpunished. "I'll Be There" was his song from "Pirate Queen."
Rae DiStefano offered her own swinging take on "Goody, Goody." Stacy touched us with "What'll I Do?" Jenny Baca's "Summertime," from "Porgy and Bess," included an interpolated swipe at George W. Bush and praise for Hillary Clinton.
Bob "Rose" Levine was a "Broadway Baby," complete with high kicks. Ariel Sinclair became Norma Desmond for "With One Look," from "Sunset Boulevard." And I tried my hand at "The Impossible Dream," from "Man of LaMancha," and "This Nearly Was Mine," from "South Pacific."
If one could level criticisms at young Brandon, they would be that some of the dishing from the stage is trashy in the extreme and he makes much too light of the consumption of alcohol, things he'll hopefully outgrow someday. Meanwhile, he and Ray see to it that there's plenty of satisfying music on tap.
