| At Lavish Benefit, Concerned Women Raise Funds to Fight Breast Cancer |
by Bruce-Michael Gelbert
|
The Concerned Women of the Grove (CWOG) held their annual Breast Cancer Benefit, raising funds for Gilda's Club NYC and the Stony Brook Center for Breast Cancer Research, on the splendid grounds of Heaven 'n Earth, at the east end of Bayview Walk, on August 4. Breast cancer awareness pink ribbon balloons, capping bouquets of round pink balloons, made for festive decorations for this lavish fundraiser for a most serious cause. Scrumptious hors d'oeuvres were prepared under the watchful eye of Mella Yodice and trays of shrimp, chicken, sushi, and miniature quiches and egg rolls emerged from the kitchen throughout the afternoon.
The silent auction of donated items included a poster of the "Dreamgirls" diva, signed, "Love, Beyoncé;" an autographed photo of Angelina Jolie; an Annie Liebowitz photo of Ellen DeGeneres, signed by Ellen; an autographed photo of "Sopranos" cast members; autographed photos of New York Yankees Joe Pepitone, Bob Feller during a 1946 game, and Don Zimmer; a baseball signed by the Mets last season; a Phoenix guitar; gift baskets of pet supplies, wine, vodka, Starbucks coffee, hair products, and makeup; gift certificates for dinners, hotel stays, a trip to Florida, Garden Grove, Pines Hardware, and Peter's Marina Meat Market at the Pines Pantry; paintings by locals Cathy Eckdahl, Eleanor Eick, and Heaven 'n Earth's Diane Romanello; photos by locals Lorraine Michels, Bob Lerch, Flo Moylett, Robert Conlon, and Marilyn Jaeckel; a Sayville Ferry ticket for 10 roundtrips; signed books by Anne Rice and James Clavell; jewelry; and tickets to baseball games, opera, theater, ballet, and television show tapings.
Dr. Allen Meeke, from Stony Brook, spoke about the research into a new type of radiation treatment that the benefit will help to fund.
Celeste sang, "Sway with Me." As Mistress of Ceremonies of a short show, Bella opened "I Got Love," from "Purlie." "I told you I was trouble/You know that I'm no good," confessed Ginger Moore in her shady lady number, while Donna Piranha insisted she was "Proud." Closing with a song dedicated to the women present, Bella declared, "I'm a middle-aged woman," and explained the pros and cons of maturity.
