Singer Tommy Femia, who 'does' Judy Garland, returned to the Ice Palace, in Cherry Grove, on August 12 to "stay and night and sing them all," both songs Garland sang and ones she might plausibly have sung had she lived longer. David Maiocco, at the piano, assisted.
In strong voice, complete with Garland's throbbing tone, Femia opened with a bang with "Hello, Bluebird" and "Alexander's Ragtime Band," before turning to a sensitive "Fifty Percent," from "Ballroom," and peppy "After You've Gone." Tommy's Judy happily limned the paradise where she hobnobs with the other illustrious deceased in "My Home Sweet Heaven" and, with drive, promised love "Come Rain or Come Shine."
Femia and guest Sidney Myer offered a duet, "Bobwhite, Whatcha Gonna Sing Tonight," and Myer delivered an ode to "Pheromones," root of "animal" attraction and boastfully recalled all the "Good Advice" he gave such major inventors and innovators as Ford, Otis, Franklin and the Wright Brothers, which sealed their successes.
Femia returned for a tribute to Broadway, selling tunes introduced by Lucille Ball--"Hey, Look Me Over," from "Wildcat"--and Ethel Merman--"Some People," from "Gypsy". Our diva sang an "I'm Still Here," Yvonne DeCarlo's number from "Follies," that was redolent of long experience and adapted some lines to reflect Garland's own circumstances.
Concluding the show was a quintet of Garland signature tunes-a wrenching "Man That Got Away," upbeat "Trolley Song," "Rockaby Your Baby with a Dixie Melody," sentimental and yearning "Over the Rainbow" and, as an encore, "Chicago, Chicago, That Toddling Town."
