Saporito Grove appearances by Miss Sweetie have been much too rare nowadays, but she made a welcome return to the Tides, on August 5, and Michael John was the DJ. A vision in blonde curls and in pink and green, Sweetie opened with "Lean on Me" and performed a propulsive Bette Midler paean to "Paradise," which our diva said reminded her of Fire Island. Sweetie channeled Ethel Merman doing "Everything's Coming Up Roses," from "Gypsy," with pizzazz, and moved us with "Just a Housewife," from "Working," offered in honor of the mothers of all of us. Miss Sweetie dedicated a melodramatic number, about the "Sailor Boys" who "stole my innocence away," to Cobra, and closed with words of encouragement and inspiration in a pairing of "You can't always get what you want, but ... you get what you need" with "I will be released."
