| Island Rep Probes Devotion, Deceit & Dysfunction in Intense English Play |

To begin its season at the Tides Playhouse in Cherry Grove, Richard LaFrance's Island Repertory Theatre Company is giving the American premiere production of an English play, "Blowing Whistles," by Matthew Todd, which presents an intriguing love triangle, while probing what it means to be gay and how options may differ, depending on one's generation.
Handsome, brooding Jamie (Tom Simonetti) and his party animal life partner, Nigel (Cem Uyanik), both in their thirties, decide to spice up their tenth anniversary and Gay Pride Day celebration with a young trick, Mark (Ryan Skilton), 19 years old, whom Nigel has found on the Internet. Guided by director LaFrance's knowing hand, the actors clearly differentiate the characters, make us laugh at their clever zingers, turn us on in the sexy scenes, and deliver intensely dramatic exchanges that feel almost painfully familiar. If there is one matter that is slightly disconcerting, it is that, in this play set in London, Simonetti sounds English, while Uyanik and Skilton do not.
Inconsistency of accent notwithstanding, Simonetti's Jamie and Uyanik's Nigel convince us of their devotion to each other, which doesn't prevent the no less vivid deceit that renders their relationship all but dysfunctional, and surprise twists and turns in the plot abound, keeping us guessing and involved. Skilton's Mark is a study in contradictions and his evolving sexual identity, as a "bi-curious" youth, who would hold gay conventions at a distance, sometimes helps him contrast neatly with the more established Jamie and Nigel, but at other times finds him amazingly in sync with them.
In one scene, in which play and company keep us on our toes, Jamie is having a conversation with someone temporarily unseen and we feel fairly confident that we know who it is-or is it? Remaining unseen, throughout the three-character work, is Mark's girlfriend, Karen, and we think we know what she means to him-or do we?
Along the way, the author and his characters offer pointed observations about gay image, fetishes, music, drag, leather, the easy availability of impersonal sex via the web, and the evolution of gay pride, which certainly make the play timely.
"Blowing Whistles" plays on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m. through July 15 and tickets, selling for $25, are available at the box office at the Tides just before the performances; at the company's table outside Island Breeze restaurant, just off the Grove dock, during the day; or by calling 631/597-9439.
