Trai La Trash has been singing at Cherry's on alternate Monday nights (with Charity performing on the other Mondays) and I caught up with her show, her second of five, on July 9. Mark LeMay was the DJ.
Fresh from a family reunion in her native Oregon, Trai La began "On Broadway" in vibrant voice and then sang an ardent, Mexican-flavored love song to her beer ("my sweet Corona"). She moved us with a sensitive "Over the Rainbow," the gay anthem, from "The Wizard of Oz," and a hot "Miss Celie's Blues," no less an anthem of sisterhood, from the film "The Color Purple." Amid jumbled memories, she recalled those "colored lights" to a lilting waltz, and seduced us as she invited us to "Sway with Me."
Our Junoesque diva addressed a knowing parent in a touching ballad from the Boy George musical, "Taboo" ("You always knew, didn't you, mother ... I was a stranger in the world"). She sentimentally reminded a love, "I was singing my song for you," and shared a magical tale with us ("There was a boy, a very strange enchanted boy"). She jazzily voiced an appetite for the "frimfram sauce" and the "shifalfa on the side" and cheerfully swore us to secrecy about her peccadillos in "Don't Tell Mama," from "Cabaret."
Trai La closed her evening of music by singing those late-night, lush-life blues in her favorite song, "One for My Baby (and one more for the road)." It's good to hear her here again.
