| Fire Island Nature's Own Spring Awakening |

In the spring, as residents who are not year-round return to Fire Island and the businesses open and the shows and contests, benefits and other events begin, it is good to take time to remember, notice and appreciate the things that drew many of us here in the first place: the beaches, dunes and woods; flowers and trees; birds, deer and other animals; and the spectacular sunsets.

The snapping turtles are very much in evidence at the western end of the Pines and come out to the dunes to lay their eggs. Some snakes have been sighted in the woods and in Grove gardens. I get reports about the foxes and their kits near the Sunken Forest. The does and their fawns seem ubiquitous and young bucks' antlers are starting to grow. On my birthday, I saw no fewer than 18 swans, and 18-chai in Hebrew, also meaning life-is a lucky number, from the bay beach between the Grove and the Pines. Talk about a splendid birthday gift!
Our two hibiscuses as blooming-a red one, with twisted stems, and an off-white one, "with raspberry centers," as Garden Grove's Michael Guerette described it-and the rhododendrons across the way and on the western end of town were, as always, wonders to watch.
