Leading performers, proving that "Cherry Grove Cares" (as the evening was billed), strutted their stuff, at the Ice Palace on June 2, in the first big fundraising show of the season, benefiting PAWS, the Pines Animal Welfare Society. Headed by hardworking Lee Frey, in the Pines, and Valerie Perez, in the Grove, PAWS rescues, cares for, and places stray cats and dogs in our communities and returns lost pets, registered with the organization, to their owners. Sal Piro of the Grove Hotel/Ice Palace organized the entertainment.
Singing smoothly in a pre-show, cabaret's Brandon Cutrell, who introduced his Methodist minister father, visiting from Indiana, cheerfully invited "Let's Misbehave;" sang a slow and moody, then intense "That Old Black Magic;" and poured out his heart in "Being Alive," from "Company." Brandon will perform at the Ice Palace on Monday nights.
Bella, MC for the first half of the evening, earthily exhorted "Be Italian" in the song from "Nine" and brought onstage our lovely new Homecoming Queen, Lola Galore, and cute newcomer Tom. "He rocks, he kicks," assured Ivanna Cocktail, about her love, in a lively country number. Demi-Tasse became Barbra for Streisand's highly personalized version of "I'm Still Here," from "Follies," incorporating "Everybody Says Don't," from "Anyone Can Whistle," and "Don't Rain on My Parade," from "Funny Girl."
Singing in a silky tenor, John DeMarco recalled that what he had with a significant other was "The next best thing to love," and followed it with a swinging 'moon medley,' including "No moon at all," "Moondance," "Moon River," and "Fly Me to the Moon." John directs "The USO Show" for the Arts Project of Cherry Grove at the Community House on June 30.
Donna Piranha, in zebra stripes and platform heels, was on hand for "I Got Rhythm." Denise, as Elvis, told her cocker spaniel, Faith, "You Ain't Nothin' but a Hound Dog." Sporting her purple fur, Charity offered a hot "Come Home, Bill Bailey." Linda Dickerman, Barbara Hirsch, Lyn Belensky, and Pat Wagnis proffered 1960s nostalgia as the Mamas and the Papas, doing the likes of "California Dreamin'" and "Dancing in the Street."

Hosting the second half of the gala, Philomena and Panzi, with one-eyed pug, Jack, in tow, enlivened the proceedings with raucous jokes, with some of Panzi's appearing to leave Philomena speechless. They also conducted a Chinese auction of a package, worth $1,400, of ferry pass, dinners at all Grove restaurants, a stay at the Grove Hotel, and a DVD player, which was won by Larry Lane. A namesake, but not a relative, of Valerie Perez won the 50-50 raffle prize of $506.
Jack Aaronson was at the keyboard assisting singers Rose Levine, who, garbed as Annie, sang "Tomorrow" to a stuffed 'Sandy;' polished baritone George Brescia, really selling "Use What You've Got," from "The Life;" and this writer, singing "Times Like This," from "Lucky Stiff," extolling placing one's trust in a faithful dog.
Our MCs introduced Urban Sprawl as "Lucy the Slut" for her sexy selection. With tigers adorning her short dress, Coco Love was a tigress herself as she warned, "Your good girls are gonna go bad." Tony Bondi concluded the entertainment with a proud and vivid "I Am What I Am," from "La Cage aux Folles."
