Cabaret singer Brandon Cutrell and versatile pianist Ray Fellman, who brought us last season's "Mostly Sondheim" nights of professional singers and open-mic, started a new Monday night series of shows, billed as "Broadway at the Beach," at the Ice Palace, and a gala opening night, on June 11, featured a guest appearance by Broadway's dynamic Kristy Cates ("Boobs," "Wicked"-as Elphaba).
Brandon and Ray performed music by Michael John LaChiusa and Andrew Lippa and, from Stephen Sondheim's "Company," "Another Hundred People" and "Being Alive," which seems to have become Brandon's emotional theme song this season. Brandon and Kristy sang a couple of duets and then our visiting diva obliged by dazzling us with "Wicked" songs "The Wizard and I," "Defying Gravity," and "I'm Not That Girl," by Stephen Schwartz.
Tenor Kenny Holcomb offered a swinging "On the Street Where You Live," from Lerner and Loewe's "My Fair Lady," and emoted in Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." Baritone Scott Hogsed sang a bel canto "So in Love," from Cole Porter's "Kiss Me, Kate." Ramiro, from Cherry Lane, delivered a dulcet "Summertime," from George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess," and my selections were Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Some Enchanted Evening," from "South Pacific," and Porter's "I Get a Kick Out of You," from "Anything Goes."
Come to hear and sing with Brandon and Ray at "Broadway at the Beach" on Mondays at 9 p.m.
