Porsche Kicks Off Memorial Day Festivities with Flair in Season's First Show

Porsche, diva of many voices, kicked off the Memorial Day long weekend with a dynamic first "Porsche Live" show of the season, at the Ice Palace, on May 24, with DJ Chuck. "I'm going to live forever," she sang, assuring us of her "Fame," for a lively opening. Demonstrating her versatility, she offered "Lady Marmalade" in, in turn, the bass growl of Cher, throaty drawl of Carol Channing, squeak of Megan Mullaly as Karen Walker, throb of Judy Garland, wispy reediness of Macy Gray, and wrenching rasp of Janis Joplin.

Porsche brought the earth mother tone and passion of Shirley Bassey to the Beatles' "Something in the Way He Moves" and, at this writer's request, volcanic "History Repeating." She became a suave, sweet-voiced and sophisticated Ella Fitzgerald for Irving Berlin's "Puttin' on the Ritz" and a smoky, world-weary Billie Holiday for "God Bless the Child (that's got his own)." She dubbed rollicking "white trash" love song "Coal Mine" simply "stupid," declaring, "If 'Stand by Your Man' can become a standard, so can that."

The singer brought her breathiest Marilyn Monroe strains to "Happy Birthday," addressed to 22-year-old Wendell, and the insinuating sound of Peggy Lee to "Fever." In "The Pines Song," a parody she wrote, with Tommy Kirby, of "My Favorite Things," from "The Sound of Music," she poked fun at the bored "Boys in white tank tops," plaintively querying, "Isn't there anything else we can do?" In response to many requests for her specialty, Janis, she sang Joplin's number one hit, "Me and Bobby Magee." Porsche poured out her heart in an electrifying "And I Am Telling You I Am not Going," from "Dreamgirls;" and, to, conclude, brought manager John Doyle to the stage and sang "One Night Only" to him.

Porsche sings at the Ice Palace on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays and in the Pines on Saturdays for the rest of the season.
