Grove Recalls Losses at Memorial Day Service

People of the Grove remembered our community's losses at the annual Memorial Day service, at the Community House on May 28. Rev. Dr. Charles Whipple spoke about the memorial service and memorial fund, both started at the height of the AIDS crisis, when Fire Island suffered so many losses, and recalled improvements to the Grove made with donations to the fund in memory of departed Grovites. In a moment of levity, he noted the demise of Top of the Bay restaurant, which, he said, "died last year."

The Cherry Grove Fire Department's Dominic DeSantis, who organizes the Memorial Day service, read names of the deceased, including Bill "Violet" Silver, artist and publisher of Violet's Wild Cherry; Philip Williams, a founder of Folsom Street East, the Leather Pride street fair, and life partner of Mr. Fire Island Leather 2002 Peter B; photographer Lucia Sutera; Vaunessa (Vaughn) Vale, of the Boston Girls; Aaron Steiner, who was the first Miss Monster "and deserved the title," according to Dominic; Robert (Bob) White, Cherry Grove Property Owners Association board member; Barry Burros; George "Vera" Gibson; Michael Cagin; Peter Krings; Everett Wismer; and family members of Grovites Billy Raskind (brother of Philis) and Sylvia Senderowitz (this writer's aunt).

Charlie Isola and Ceejay Rosen, Presidents of the Cherry Grove Community Association and Arts Project of Cherry Grove respectively, made suitably solemn speeches, and Ceejay made particular mention of those serving in the armed forces.

John Nieman played a contemplative Adagio Cantabile movement from Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata, Opus 13, and "Eulogy," his own proud, peaceful and hopeful arrangement of gay anthems "I Am What I Am," by Jerry Herman, from "La Cage aux Folles," and "Over the Rainbow," by Harold Arlen and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, from "The Wizard of Oz." John and his partner, Rick Reder, led the mourner's Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, in Aramaic and English, and Dr. Whipple offered a closing benediction.
