On May 27, at the Arts Project of Cherry Grove(APCG)'s annual Memorial Day eve Membership Party at the Community House, Lola Galore won the competition for Grove Homecoming Queen 2007 by overwhelming audience acclaim, beating three (or four) other contenders.
After a greeting by APCG President Ceejay Rosen, Bella and Panzi hosted the lively contest, against a woodsy background, created by Harold Seeley, which inspired Panzi to make many raucous Meat Rack jokes. Contestants against whom Lola competed were Uma Assburns, Jean Germaine, Renée Ryan and, putting in a guest appearance, but not seriously competing, unofficial candidate Zondra Foxx.
Lola, who hails from Argentina, had competed in previous years' Homecoming Queen contests. The week before, the Grove's leather community selected a South American as well to be the new Mr. Fire Island Leather, Diego Vargas, from Colombia, making his second attempt to win the title. Diego is likely to be Lola's escort as she leads the Grove in its festive Fourth of July Invasion of the Pines.

The Grove's beloved Homecoming Queen 2006, Coco Love, brought down the house by bidding farewell to her position, in an artfully unruly blonde Afro, short shimmering dress, and pink boa, with "And I Am Telling You I Am not Going," from "Dreamgirls," delivered as a hysterical protest against giving up the crown.
During the evening, Bella and Panzi (who was the Grove's first Homecoming Queen, in 1976 and 1977) acknowledged the presence of past Grove HQs Luisa Verde, Cobra, Charity, China, Ivanna Cocktail, Scarlett O! (the only female HQ), Mandi, Philomena, and Ariel Sinclair. And, interjecting a political note, Panzi urged the assembled to contact their Congressional representatives and urge them to support repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" rule.
