A mild, peaceful late-April day meant a brief pre-season visit to Fire Island to see the ocean and the beach, the deer and the birds and to get a sneak preview of developments in our communities.
Meryl Facterman reported that a restaurant, Shag's, is going to open on the ground floor, front, of the Tides, where the Monster and Bay Leaf's front bar used to be. Tides events will continue in the back bar, the theater, and upstairs, indoors and out.

Jacqué Piazza will manage Cherry's, and Donna, Kevin, Mark and Hiram have been preparing it with her for its season's opening.
Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate looks very much in residence in what was Burger Queen.
At the Grove Hotel, announcements for the Mr. Fire Island Leather contest, on May 19 at 10 pm, are posted, and Andy is getting Rainbow Dreams ready for its opening.
Things are starting to stir at Jumping Jack's Seafood Shack.
Erin filled me in on some of what's happening in the Pines. The new building on the site of Pavilion/Sandpiper will house a fruit, vegetable, meat and fish market where the downstairs front bar was, a club will continue where the dance floor has been, and tea will continue upstairs. The new deluxe community house is slated to open in June, during Pride weekend, with music by DJ Twisted Dee and an appearance by Barbara Cook.
