On May 19, at the Grove Hotel's Ice Palace, Diego Vargas, from Colombia and New York City, became the newest Mr. Fire Island Leather, chosen by a panel of seven judges and beating three other impressive contenders. He is the first Latino Mr. FI Leather and this was his second time vying for the title. Diego won a cash prize; hotel room and event admission tickets for the Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather competition in Washington, D.C. next January; and a sash made and presented by David Samuel Menkes, custom leatherwear designer, who summers in Fire Island Pines. The hotel will also make a donation to the charity of Diego's choice, which was the Cherry Grove Doctor's Fund. Mark, from the Pines, was the audience favorite and was awarded the title of Mr. Meat Rack, which also came with a cash prize. The other contestants were the Grove's CJ and Rich McPheeters, who is sings with the New York City Gay Men's Chorus.

MCs for this seventh annual contest were the hotel's Isaac Steven Vaughan and Ariel Sinclair. Judges were five of the six former Messrs. FI Leather-this writer (2001), Peter B (2002), East Village Stud Jeff Goodman (2004), Joe Saporito (2005) and, stepping down and ending his 'reign,' Master Tom (2006)-as well as Menkes and Victor Skolnik, President of Excelsior Motorcycle Club. The contest was held during Excelsior's 32nd anniversary Lust for Life run, which had the theme "The Hung & the Restless." Contestants were judged on image, stage presence, interview, meat rack fantasy, and general preparedness.

"Fangs and biting" was the suggested theme for the fantasies and both Diego and CJ adhered to it with evocative vampire scenes. Diego's was an elaborate dramatic vignette he performed with his partner John, who rose from a coffin. CJ opted for a humorous approach, which included biting Ariel on the neck, to the accompaniment of jungle drums. Wearing leather from Munich, Germany, Rich related a humorous meat rack encounter, which concluded abruptly when his fantasy man was obliged to depart on the next ferry. Mark was blindfolded and gagged with a jock strap and tied, bare-assed and spread eagle, with ropes binding him hand and foot.

Ariel was a one-person Andrews Sisters, as she entertained with a number about a love who is "sweet like a sugar-coated candyman."

Excelsior's run was attended by 36 leathermen and one leatherwoman, with guests representing the New York Renegades and Iron Guard, the Long Island Ravens, the Philadephians and Pennsmen, Connecticut's Twilight Guard, and Toronto's Spearheads. Maryland LeatherSir and Boy 2007 Eric and Luke were also in attendance.
